1997 Photo Competition
|
The overall tone of this years competition will come as a shock to many members. Looking at the pictures and asking what impression they give of the Association, the word "wholesome" suggests itself. Not far away is the strong inference of "family fun". Where, I hear you asking, are the allusions to alcoholic excess, indolence and irresponsibility? It is surely for members to decide if such wanton misrepresentation can be allowed to continue. The winner of Best Picture quite simply won us over with its charm. The smiles on the faces of Dominic Jarman and his son, so obviously enjoying their time together, amply illustrates the "what-Drascombes-are-all-about" aim of the competition. Our congratulations to him. The two runners-up are also worthy pictures. We liked Bill Jackson's shot of some of the Scottish boats on their Grand Fleet Day. His whimsical footnote to this idyllic scene once again highlights the paradox that is Scottish sailing. John Stevens offers a vivid and unusual image of a Drascombe providing the only splash of colour on a dark and rock-strewn shoreline. Humour, and the sole alcoholic reference, is provided by Des Benett's picture of the Drascombe booze cruise to Bolougne. He wins our humorous section with a good picture and a witty caption. The Junior winner, young Mr Snodgrass, gives cause for some concern. The angle of his shot, also of the Scottish fleet, suggests that it was taken from in the water! How, and more particularly, why? As ever, we're amazed not only at those members who manage to take such good pictures but also that they take the time and trouble to present them so splendidly and send them in. Thanks and congratulations to all the entrants, to our prizewinners and to Graham Brown Insurance Brokers for their sponsorship of the prizes. Martin Randall |
