1998 Photo Competition
|
The very idea of a contest sits rather uncomfortably alongside the friendly, non-competitive spirit of the Drascombe Association. So it's a strange feeling year by year to have to try and sit in judgement, one member against another, a task made all the harder by the huge variety of entries. But, we steel ourselves even to this distasteful task - and here are the results. The winner of Best Photograph is an apparently simple shot of the foredeck of a Dabber. "Anyone could have taken that" remarked one of our judging group - but "anyone" didn't and Bob Heasman did! Like a great work of art, the more you study the picture, the more you are drawn into the very feel of a living, sailing craft. Congratulations Bob. Alec Bell's shot of his Dabber on Lough Derg is technically perhaps the best of the year, beautifully composed and presented, though perhaps lacking that vital "feel". An atmospheric picture, Home from the Fastnet has plenty of "feel" but not much Drascombe! Yet Richard Clammer manages to convey a wonderful sense of scale and drama. The Fastnet can be glimpsed by those with 20/20 vision. Two worthy runners-up. Humour was abundant this year - maybe it needed to be in view of the weather. Dominic Jarman's picture has many elements : setting, background, downtrodden wives. Together they catch a lovely moment and he wins the Best Humorous Picture. A slightly lower-key competition this year. I hope nobody will feel that they've failed because they're not prize-winners. We have enjoyed all the shots, capturing as they do so many enjoyable, tender and funny moments in the Drascombe sailing year. Thanks to all the entrants and to Graham Brown for sponsoring the prizes. Martin Randall |
